Historic Preservation students explore old buildings to diagnose structural issues
Students in the Master of Historic Preservation program get hands-on experience researching the physical condition of old buildings. Every Fall semester, students in Dr. Mark Reinberger's Building Material Conservation class are divided into teams to create structural assessments for a variety of clients. Students in the class were interviewed about their experiences.
Improving Rural Health through Design
Researchers have identified significant linkages between public health and the design of the built environment, including impacts on physical activity, walkability, social and mental health. While most design research centers on the re-design of cities and other urban places, Georgia is predominately a rural state. With the 20th highest adult and the 18th highest child obesity rates in the nation, rural Georgia needs design interventions that are sustainable, community supported and cost-effective. While better health outcomes through design is frequently touted for urban areas, research neglects design and planning for rural communities.
Network for Engineering With Nature (N-EWN) Collaboration
Sixteen UGA researchers from 10 different colleges and departments will apply their expertise to N-EWN's mission. The project leader for UGA is principal investigator Dr. Brian Bledsoe, a professor in the College of Engineering, who specializes in resilient infrastructure. Dr. Jon Calabria, a professor in the College of Environment and Design, will also be a partner in the project. The N-EWN partnership will also draw from the expertise of the UGA's River Basin Center and Center for Integrative Conservation Research. In addition, an equal number of researchers from USACE will add their knowledge and skill to the network, led by Dr. Todd Bridges, the EWN National Lead and Dr. Jeffrey King, EWN Deputy National Lead. Dr. Calabria states, "We are just beginning to conceptualize ways to integrate nature-based infrastructure to achieve sustainability and resiliency goals. Students and I are in the process of creating graphics and plans to inform these goals at several scales."
Teaching in the Time of Covid-19
Environment, Design, and Teaching in times of COVID-19: PhD student professional development at CED. Doctoral students at the College of Environment and Design can work on their teaching skills through their assistantships, working as teaching assistants or instructors of record. Such opportunities prepare them for a career in academia and invite them to innovate in the classroom.
Mentorship Meetings Fall 2020
One of the best ways for students to learn about what their career will be like after college is to talk to professionals in the field. This semester the bachelor's and master's students in the Landscape Architecture program spoke via Zoom with CED alumni in landscape architecture and related careers across the country.
