Student Stories

We know our CED students and alumni can change the world for the better. Our goal is to encourage and enable more students by giving them the flexibility to make discoveries that effect positive solutions. Students who receive financial support are able to focus much more on their education and take advantage of other opportunities that the University offers.

Help us ensure that hardworking students can succeed in their endeavors by supporting the College of Environment and Design.

Karlie Roper

WHEN KARLIE DISCOVERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, IT SEEMED LIKE ALL THE PUZZLE PIECES FELL TOGETHER. A PERFECT COMBINATION OF HER LOVE OF ART AND NATURE.

Karlie Roper (BLA 2022) was born in Tampa, Florida and moved around a lot as a kid. Eventually her family settled in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. Karlie attended Greater Atlanta Christian School and was passionate about environmental sciences and sculptural art. As she began looking into what she wanted to study, it seemed like all the puzzle pieces fell together when she discovered landscape architecture - a perfect combination of her love of art and nature.

Karlie has loved the CED since the first day of classes when she met one of her best friends at orientation. Knowing her classmates and professors on a personal level has been one of the best parts of Karlie’s college experience. Karlie states “UGA is a big University, but the CED feels like home within a large town.” She has noticed that even after students graduate, the family feeling at CED remains. As Karlie prepares to graduates in 2022, she realizes she has grown tremendously from her first days learning what type of pencil to use to now completing entire projects in a blink of an eye. Karlie knows she would never have been able to be where she is today without the guidance of everyone at the CED.

Every year since she started at the CED Karlie applied to scholarships and was lucky enough to have felt supported through her college journey. Karlie has worked part-time jobs since high school, and in college she juggled working multiple part-time jobs while managing a full course load. CED scholarships enabled her to focus more on her studies and work towards the career she loves. She received the prestigious and competitive Neel Reid Scholarship which was paramount to enabling her complete her internship in Colorado last summer.  Since this summer, Karlie has refined her landscape architecture skills and looks forward to starting a career following graduate in May.
