Messages from the Associate Dean

Hello ced students,

I would like to welcome our new and returning students to the College of Environment and Design (CED) as we enter a new academic year! The CED faculty and staff have prepared excellent courses, projects, and instructional materials for your professional education. I look forward to a fantastic year ahead.

- Ashley Steffens, CED Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

CED Facilities

Did you know that the CED is spread across numerous locations across north campus? There is the Jackson Street Building with the largest and oldest Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program in the country. It also includes a computer lab, a VR lab, lecture rooms, and a large event/crit space. The Owen’s Resource Center is located in JSB. Students can rent equipment, get IT assistance, plot drawings, come study, or peruse an excellent selection of print materials in the library space. The Circle Gallery hosts various exhibitions throughout the year. Come by and check out some of the resources available to you or peruse projects in the Circle Gallery throughout the year.

The Master of Landscape Architecture program is ranked in the top 10 in the country. Along with the oldest Historic Preservation program in the country, the prestigious MHP and MLA programs both reside in Denmark Hall. Denmark Hall now includes a science lab space and has several general use computers available for student use.

CED’s Center for Community Design and Preservation Office and the FindIt Historic Resource Survey Partnership are in the Founders Memorial House, located in the beautiful Founders Memorial Garden. Come have a picnic, stroll through the garden, or consider volunteering at this historic and uniquely situated garden space.

The MUPD and PhD in Environmental Design and Planning are housed in one of the coolest buildings on campus, the Tanner Building. It was an old lumber distribution center and has been renovated to include studios, a computer lab, and lecture spaces.

The Bishop House, next to JSB, includes several faculty and staff offices but is also home to two feral cats, Peep and No-B. They are a bit skittish but fun to watch.

Access to Facilities and IT

As a reminder, all CED buildings will be locked and inaccessible on Saturdays between 12:00 am - 11:59 pm when there are home football games. Plan to bring home materials you might need on those weekends and secure all personal items when you leave the studio or classroom.
