Libraries
Both on and off campus, Athens offers several libraries which provide useful resources for students, including books, maps, government documents, photographs, letters, newspaper articles, and a wide array of online sources. For more information on individual libraries and what they offer:
The Owens Library, located in the College of Environment and Design’s Jackson Street Building, contains a circulating collection of books, journals, theses, and senior projects on topics relating to landscape architecture, historic preservation, environmental planning and design, and environmental ethics. In addition, the library maintains non-circulating items, such as photographs, plans, drawings, videos, and rare books. For more information: http://www.ced.uga.edu/about/facilities/.
The Hargrett Library is located within the Russell Special Collections Library on South Hull Street. They house a variety of resources which focus largely on Georgia history, including historical manuscripts, rare books and Georgiana, historic maps and photographs. The Russell Library is also located in the Russell Special Collections Library. With over 300 collections, this library provides important resources regarding the politics of Georgia and its’ people. For more information: www.libs.uga.edu/russell/collections.html.
The UGA Science Library, located on South Campus in the Boyd Graduate Research Studies building, maintains resources regarding physical and life science. The South Campus Writing Center can also be found here. For more information: www.libs.uga.edu/science/.
The Digital Library of Georgia, based out of the University of Georgia Libraries, is a growing partnership between libraries, archives, museums, and other organizations throughout the state. Focused primarily on the history and culture of Georgia, this online library provides access to digitized resources, such as books, photographs, newspapers, and audio files, along with a large variety of other material. The mission of the Athens-Clarke County Library is to provide information and resources which address the needs of the community, foster enjoyment and a love of reading, and provide a repository of the history and culture of Athens-Clarke County.
