HIPR6950: Preservation Planning
Historic Preservation Planning introduces the methods, history, and theory of urban and environmental planning from the perspective of historic preservation. It seeks to ask questions such as, how do the goal of preservationists and planners align and diverge? How do preservationists and planners work together in the private and public sectors for agreed-upon ends? How do preservationists plan for the good of their local communities? What are the tools and methods available for preservationists to do so?
In addition to the theoretical grounding, the course will introduce students to the practice of preservation planning through a semester-long collaborate project developing a preservation plan for a local community.
Students in Dr. Scott Nesbit's Fall 2018 class worked with closeby City of Winterville
to survey and develop a preservation plan so that the local government may designate
local historic districts.
