MLA Student Get the Scoop on Daily Tasks at HGOR Landscape Architecture Firm

What day-to-day tasks are involved in the professional world of a landscape architect? Which skills are most marketable and how will employers help shape one’s professional trajectory? These were a few of the questions on the minds of CED graduate students who visited Atlanta landscape architecture firm HGOR recently.

HGOR, one of the most recognizable and longstanding landscape architecture firms in the Southeast, hosted MLA students from Dr. Jon Calabria’s Professional Practice class on Oct. 13th. HGOR is known for its wide-ranging work, from corporate headquarters to campuses, to city parks. Students were hosted for lunch and presentations by HGOR’s team and given the chance to inquire about specifics of daily responsibilities and inner-workings of a professional firm. HGOR team members Chris Mutter, James Shulte and Nathan Holst shared their professional experiences and eased some of the concerns for students on the path to graduation next semester.

“I was relieved to know that firms like HGOR are willing to work with us as beginners, that we don’t have to be perfect in all our skills and that they will guide and train us as we begin our careers once we start work,” says third year MLA Danielle Schwartz.

HGOR is directed by CED alumnus Bob Hughes (BLA ’77) and sponsors an annual lecture here at the college that highlights the work of cutting edge practitioners.
