MHP Student Rose Mayo was awarded a Willson Center for the Humanities & Arts Graduate Research Grant during the Fall 2019 semester. This grant supports her research trips to Monticello (Charlottesville, VA), Mount Vernon (Mt Vernon, VA), Alexander Hamilton Grange National Monument (New York, NY), and Morris-Jumel Mansion (New York, NY). Mayo's thesis "Who Tells Your Story: An analysis of historic sites’ interactions with mass cultural references from artistic works" examines the interaction between cultural references created by and history presented in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, and interpretation of historic sites associated with key characters. Ultimately, Mayo seeks to understand the ways in which historic sites can utilize public and popular history to expand public knowledge about a particular person or event. As part of the grant award, she will be participating in the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition in Spring 2020 where she will compete against other UGA students.
