In Memoriam: Scott Weinberg

We are deeply saddened to announce that Scott S. Weinberg, a retired professor and former Interim Dean of the CED, passed away on Saturday morning, May 13, 2023.

Scott was born in 1950 on Christmas Day in Middle Village, New York. Described as being “a child at heart until the day he died,” Scott “loved magic, animals, Disney World, and most of all Christmas.”

In 1972, Scott received a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University followed by a Master of Landscape Architecture which he completed in 1981. It was at Iowa State where Scott met his wife, Jan Hass, and the couple married in the summer of 1971.

Scott began his career at the University of Georgia in 1982 and quickly became a beloved member of the CED. During his 30-year career at the University of Georgia, Scott served as the Associate Dean of the CED from 2003 to 2006, Interim Dean from 2006 to 2008, and Associate Dean again until his retirement in 2012. Scott also authored one book and co-edited two books on landscape architecture and earned three CED teaching awards. In addition, he served as the Chair of the University Council and as president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Society for Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Scott spent his summers teaching in Italy, as part of the UGA Cortona Study Away program, where he made lifelong friendships. He was also a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend to his students. He will be deeply missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him.

There will be a graveside service celebrating the life of Scott on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, NY.
