CED Welcomes Paul MacGregor, New Curator of the Historic Founders Memorial Garden

The CED welcomes Paul MacGregor as the new curator of the historic Founders Memorial Garden. Paul, who holds degrees in horticulture and agricultural education, hit the ground running August 1st after a few days’ training with Maureen O’Brien, who retired this summer. Paul’s life in landscapes and plants began with cutting lawns in high school. His professional career skills were honed in field production nurseries and landscape architecture firms. While getting his horticulture degree at UGA he worked at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and then joined as a staff member where he worked in the rose and rhododendron gardens. He has also sold field-grown specialty cut flowers from his Oconee County home where he and his wife have raised two children.

In addition to growing and caring for plants, Paul spent several years working as a consultant with landscape architect Bob Smith, assisting with site evaluation and wetlands determination in addition to plant design, installation, and care. The Founders Memorial Garden is a vital part of the College of Environment and Design, welcoming thousands of visitors each year for educational and social events. Originally conceived by the college’s first dean, Hubert Bond Owens, the garden remains a favorite place for outdoor classes, receptions, or just a peaceful stroll during daylight hours.
