Dean Sonia Hirt signs contract for her fifth book

New book

Dean Sonia Hirt has signed a new book contract with Routledge—a highly respected multinational publisher, founded in Great Britain in 1836 by George Routledge. The press focuses on academic books and journals in the humanities, education, law, and the social sciences.

Dr. Hirt will be the second author of this manuscript, working with Professor Emeritus John Levy, Virginia Tech, and Professor Casey Dawkins, University of Maryland. The three scholars will work on the 12th edition of Contemporary Urban Planning—one of the most successful textbooks in the discipline. The text covers the history and theory of urban planning, contemporary practices at different scales, and the major professional subfields.

Professor John Levy, an esteemed authority on urban planning and economic development, has been the single author of Contemporary Urban Planning through its eleven editions. His work has been cited well over a thousand times and has been widely used in classrooms in the US and abroad, through translations in Korean, Mandarin, and Russian.

The 12th edition of Contemporary Urban Planning will be Dr. Hirt’s fifth book. Publication is expected for the fall semester of 2024.
