CED Alum Spotlight: English Hinton, MHP '20

English Hinton, MHP '20

CED is always proud to celebrate our alumni and their accomplishments in a variety of fields. Whether it’s project management or site design, non-profit organizations or private firms, our graduates apply their diverse skillsets to build dynamic careers in the ever-evolving design industry.

English Hinton, MHP ‘20, currently serves as the Construction Project Manager for Sunshine on a Ranney Day, a charity founded in 2012 that renovates and builds custom rooms for children with special needs throughout Metro Atlanta. The organization specializes in wheelchair accessible bathrooms and also offers in-home therapy rooms and dream bedrooms all at no costs to the families.

This position provides unique opportunities to combine Hinton’s passion for preservation with innovative construction and design to meet families’ specific needs. “I don't typically get to do many historic homes,” Hinton shared, “but we just finished up a bathroom renovation on a 1910 mill house in Acworth and as you can imagine, that project kind of became my baby because I wanted to make sure it was done right.”

Hinton is looking forward to serving not only as project manager but also designer for another historic home this fall. That project will renovate an 1890s house in Acworth adding wheelchair accessibility to an existing bathroom and upgrading two bedrooms.

When asked how her experience at CED influences her work today, Hinton focused on how preservation projects impact people. “My time in the CED taught me something very important about preservation - buildings are important but people are more important,” Hinton said. “The key is figuring out how we can best renovate buildings to serve people well while still preserving [the buildings’] character defining features. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.”

For Hinton, the joy of her job comes from this intersection of technical skills and the organization’s strong mission to have lasting, positive impacts with these families. “It's a great organization,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to get hands on experience while also making a real difference.”
