About the Master of Historic Preservation Program
At the University of Georgia, you’ll step into history every day. Founded in 1785, UGA is the oldest state-chartered university in the U.S., and its North Campus, home to the College of Environment and Design (CED), is a living part of history itself. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a gateway to learning from Georgia’s rich past right in Athens and the surrounding communities. At CED, you’ll get hands-on experience tackling modern issues like equity, sustainability, and smart development in both rural and urban environments.
Our Master of Historic Preservation program offers a broad education. You’ll dive into preservation planning, architectural history, building materials, law, and more. With electives, study abroad options, and our unique two-week “Maymesters,” you can customize your learning journey. Each spring, our students explore real-world preservation in Savannah or Charleston, networking with local professionals. The program wraps up with a master’s thesis, letting you apply everything you’ve learned to a personal research project.
Student life at UGA is vibrant. The Student Historic Preservation Organization (SHPO) is active in community volunteering, hosts trivia nights, and organizes guest lectures. MHP students also love tailgating at the Founders House and cheering on the Dawgs at Sanford Stadium. Whether you’re grabbing coffee downtown, enjoying local breweries, or hanging out at Denmark Hall, you’ll find a close-knit community that makes your experience here unforgettable.
