Assistant Professor Selected for Inaugural CELA/CLARB Faculty Licensure Advancement Program

Dr. Zhongzhe Shen, assistant professor of landscape architecture, was selected into the inaugural CELA/CLARB Faculty Licensure Advancement Program, a competitive initiative designed to support landscape architecture educators in becoming licensed practitioners of the profession.

Congratulations to Dr. Zhongzhe Shen, assistant professor of landscape architecture, on selection into the inaugural CELA/CLARB Faculty Licensure Advancement Program. The program, a competitive initiative jointly sponsored by the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture and the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards, provides support to landscape architecture educators seeking licensure in the profession. Only up to three nominees are selected into the program each application cycle.

As part of the program, Shen will receive up to $5,000 in services and support from CELA and CLARB to move forward with the licensure plan, along with connection to unique mentorship opportunities. To be considered for the program, nominees submitted a proposal outlining qualifications and an anticipated schedule for licensure. Only one faculty member per institution can be nominated per year.

“The new CELA/CLARB Faculty Licensure Advancement Program is an incredibly important initiative that supports both the future of the profession and the educators who shape the next generation of landscape architects,” said Ashley Steffans, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Crowley Professor in Urban Planning and Design. “I’m thrilled that Dr. Shen was selected to participate in this program and confident that this opportunity will continue to strengthen the connection between academia and professional practice.”

Shen received his Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Research with a focus on Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech in 2024. His research spans landscape performance, climate change, sustainability, data visualization and the integration of emerging technologies in landscape architecture. Shen holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in landscape architecture and has professional experience in the industry.

“I’m honored to be selected for the CELA/CLARB Faculty Licensure Advancement Program,” said Shen. “Pursuing licensure is an extension of my commitment to connect professional standards with the classroom. It strengthens my ability to bring professional standards into the class and studio and to mentor students on their own licensure journeys. I’m grateful for the CED’s support.”

The program was created in 2025 with the mission to advance CLARB Certification and/or licensure among full time faculty members at CELA member schools in North America.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Shen on this accomplishment!
