This September the University of Georgia’s second year MLA class had the opportunity to design a small pocket park on the Atlanta Beltline. This 600 sq. ft. space is located in the Reynoldstown neighborhood on the eastside of Atlanta and contains one of the few patches of relatively mature tree canopy left along the proposed Beltline.
We spent the first week reviewing the site map and creating a site analysis based on the Sites v2 Reference Guide for Sustainable Land Design and Development.
After the site analysis, we set off for Atlanta early on a Thursday afternoon to walk the site with constituents from Trees Atlanta and participate in a four-hour charrette at Atlanta City Studio.
Our class was chomping at the bit to get in the studio and put pen to paper.
We spent four hours fleshing out design ideas through cooperative work in a charrette at Atlanta City Studio in Ponce City Market.
With fresh perspective from the site, and inspiration from the charrette we headed back to Athens to finalize our designs over the next week.
