Biographical Information

Umit Yilmaz, Ph.D., is the Graduate Coordinator of the Master of Urban Planning and Design Program and Athletic Association Professor of the College of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses, landscape architecture, and planning studios. His studios not only include analyses of the environment, programming, developing visions, and design proposals to address the issues, but also emphasize the art of design communication using the latest technology and conventional methods.

He has extensive professional and academic experience in urban design, physical planning, architecture, and landscape architecture and received a number of honors and awards for his work. Before joining UGA in 2010, he has served on the faculties of Istanbul Technical University and Clemson University; and practiced in Istanbul, Turkey, and Irvine, CA. His scholarly interests include changes in physical environments, history and preservation of urban forms, and innovations in teaching methodologies.

Yilmaz received his Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Urban Planning and Design, and Ph.D. in City Planning from Istanbul Technical University.

He is also an amateur documentary photographer, digital graphic artist, woodworker, builder, welder, baker, and gardener.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Planning and design of natural and built environments, public spaces, historic and vernacular landscapes; Documentation of and mapping changes in the physical environment and land uses; Representation and design communication; Digital modeling for urban design.
