The 2021 Symposium on Recognition, Reconciliation, and Redress will examine the history of slavery at the University of Georgia. Scholars, activists, political representatives, artists, educators, students, and practitioners will participate. Presented virtually and free to the public April 30 and May 1, 2021, the program will feature presentations and performances that seek to recognize, reconcile, and redress the historical and contemporary impacts of slavery at the University of Georgia and in Athens, Georgia. This symposium will be a space for a conversation among a broad group of people and organizations interested in exploring racial justice within and beyond the University of Georgia community.
Several CED colleagues have been instrumental in this program. Dr. Scott Nesbit and MHP student Amy Andrews have served on the planning committee, and Dr. Nesbit is presenting and moderating several sessions. Theatre and Film Studies student Caroline Caiden will present an audio play developed during Dr. Nesbit’s Public History and Technology class based on oral histories recorded during the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project of the Works Progress Administration. Aubrey Newby, a UGA senior with a certificate in Historic Preservation, will discuss the lives of enslaved persons on the estate of Alonzo Church, the longest serving president of the University of Georgia (1829-1859). Master of Landscape Architecture student Aron Hall will present on the past, present and future of Brooklyn Cemetery in Athens based on his work in Professor Katherine Melcher’s Community Engagement Studio in the fall of 2020.
This virtual event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
