The College of Environment + Design is pleased to present “Valuing Water, Culture, and Heritage,” a lecture by Carola Hein.
Carola Hein is a distinguished professor at TU Delft School of Architecture in the Netherlands. In addition, she is the founder and director of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus PortCityFutures program (PCF) and holds the position of Professor of Water, Ports, and Historic Cities at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University and the Erasmus University Rotterdam’s School of History, Culture and Communication.
Professor Hein is an expert in the history of architecture and urban planning, and her research is focused on water-rich cities, exploring their past, present, and future. Port Cities have a history of adapting to new circumstances, like climate change, urbanism, migration, and other significant developments. They are also internationally connected, which means that changes happening in one city will have a direct impact on port cities in other parts of the world. The PortCityFutures program explores the effect of competing interests in spacial development needs at the port, city, and regional levels, providing valuable insight into creative solutions and design measures so that the port, city, and region can evolve together. Hein’s belief is that a wider understanding of how these cities have adapted in the past can help us develop strategies to ensure their inclusive, healthy, and sustainable future. Her research encourages us to think of water not just as an economic resource but also as a cultural, social, and spatial entity to engage with.
Professor Hein’s expertise is recognized internationally, and she has held the UNESCO Chair for Water, Ports, and Historic Cities since early 2022. As part of the University Signature Lecture Series, Professor Hein will discuss her fascinating research on water-rich cities, share how the PCF program shapes awareness into action by developing unique engagement tools, and inspire us to rethink water’s value in our society.
“Valuing Water, Culture, and Heritage” will be presented by Carola Hein in the UGA Chapel on March 27th at 4:30pm.
