Associate Professor Ashley Steffens serves as ASLA Professional Awards Juror, elected CELA President

Associate Professor Ashley Steffens recently served as a juror of the ASLA Professional Research Awards category at the ASLA headquarters in Washington, DC. One of 11 jurors, she reviewed 16 submissions dealing with a variety of research topics such as coastal stabilization, urban water systems, global environmental planning and topics related to current social and economic factors for planning and design.

Each year, the ASLA Professional Awards honor the best in landscape architecture from around the globe. The prestige of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ awards program relies in large part on the high caliber of the juries convened each year to review submissions. The ASLA Honors and Awards Advisory Committee seeks to assemble juries that represent the breadth of the profession, including private, public, institutional, and academic practice, and exemplify diversity in professional experience, geography, gender, and ethnicity.

Award recipients will receive featured coverage in Landscape Architecture Magazine, the magazine of ASLA, and in many other design and construction industry and general interest media. Award recipients, their clients, and advisors will be honored at the awards presentation ceremony during the ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO in Philadelphia, October 19-22, 2018.

Steffens was also recently elected president of the Council of Educators of Landscape Architecture (CELA). Comprised of over 120 institutions and individuals, CELA serves eleven regions throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the Pacific Rim and beyond, and supports research, pedagogy, scholarship, and public service in the discipline of landscape architecture.

Steffens will serve a three-year term during which she will serve as President Elect and Chair of the Standing Committee for Management and Operations the first year, President and Chair of the Standing Committee for Strategic Planning the second year and Past President and Chair of the Standing Committee for Organization and Structure the third year. She has been active with CELA for several years, previously serving on the Executive Committee as the Vice President for Communications and as track co-chair for Design Education and Pedagogy for the Annual CELA conference held at member institutions around the world.

At the College of Environment and Design Steffens teaches computer and hand graphics and a community design studio, among other things. She holds a BS in Environmental Science from UNC-Asheville and an MLA (1994) from UGA. She is the co-author of the book, Computer Graphics for Landscape Architects: An Introduction.
