James Schulte is a lecturer at The University of Georgia’s College of Environment of Design (CED). James obtained a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture in 2011 from the University of Georgia and interned with EDSA in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2010, working on multiple hospitality projects in the Middle East. After graduating, James worked as a designer and project manager for the commercial planning and landscape architecture firm HGOR in Atlanta, GA. At HGOR, James worked on projects ranging from infill housing to corporate office campuses, residential master planning, mixed-use urban designs, and college campuses, along with a variety of other designs.

In 2019, James left HGOR and returned to The University of Georgia in order to pursue a master’s degree in landscape architecture. During this time, James focused his research on vegetated roofs and their ability to both combat the climate crisis in Atlanta, GA and help offset the loss of the urban tree canopy due to commercial development within the city. Submitting a proposal to TEDx, James was selected to present his research, along with six other speakers, to the university and public as a part of the TEDx Salon Series in 2020. James graduated with his master’s degree in December 2020 and joined the faculty as a visiting lecturer in January 2022. In March 2022, James was selected to present at CELA’s annual conference in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM, where he gave a talk entitled “A City Under the Sedums: Ecosystem Services and Adoption of Vegetated Roofs in Atlanta, Georgia”.

James holds numerous service roles at the CED. He serves on the lecture committee, and is the faculty advisor to the Georgia Landscape Magazine. He also co-leads a domestic field study program which will travel to the Pacific Northwest in 2023, visiting professional design firms, world-famous landscapes, and landscape architecture designs.
