SHPO Volunteers With Hands on Athens

The Student Historic Preservation Organization spent the weekend of April 8-9 volunteering with Hands on Athens. Hands on Athens, a program of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, is an organization dedicated to assisting low-income Athens homeowners in historic neighborhoods to maintain, repair, and restore their properties as part of overall neighborhood revitalization. As part of their volunteer work this weekend, SHPO members assisted in making repairs to a roof and siding of an addition to a historic shotgun house in Athens. Students also worked to take down wooden storage structures in the backyard and remove trash from the property. Students participating were Olivia Head, Sean Griffith, Shannon Winterhalter, Dylan Stearns, Rebekah Helfgot, and Maria Rachal. Special thanks to John Kissane, Hands on Athens Program Administrator, and George Wright, contractor. To learn more about Hands on Athens, click here.
