Dorinda Dallmeyer to Give Bartram Lecture at Office of Reed Hilderbrand

Dorinda Dallmeyer, author and director of the Environmental Ethics Certificate Program at UGA, will give a lecture titled “Natural Curiosity and Natural History: William Bartram’s Observations on the Land and Life Along the Mississippi” at the offices of Reed Hilderbrand, landscape architects, in Cambridge, MA on Thursday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m. In addition to teaching, Dallmeyer has served as editor and essayist in several anthologies of southern nature writing and is currently producing a documentary about Bartram’s influence in the understanding and conservation of southern landscapes. She is the inaugural speaker (2018) for the firm’s annual lecture series.

According to Dallmeyer, “[i]n the decade preceding the American Revolutionary War, naturalist and adventurer William Bartram journeyed through the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia, as well as the lands that would become Louisiana and Mississippi. Two generations before the publication of Frederick Law Olmsted’s book about the South (The Cotton Kingdom), Bartram framed the American South as a beguiling and beautiful cultural landscape.”

Since the mid-1990s, the Reed Hildebrand firm has been known for its sensitive urban design, campus designs, and museum landscapes.

Based in the UGA College of Environment and Design, the Environmental Ethics certificate is available to all UGA students.
