Allen

Doug Allen Institute / Kappa Sigma Student Support Fund

Eligibility: BLA/MLA/MHP/MUPD

Purpose: Established in 2017.

Background: This scholarship was established by friends of the late Doug Allen, who graduated from the CED in 1970.

Additional Conditions: None.

Benson

Benson Family Graduate Student Support

Eligibility: MLA

Purpose: This fund was created by Jon and Marianne Benson to provide support for graduate students in the CED, particularly those studying for the MLA degree and who are changing careers.

Additional Conditions: Must be a citizen or legal resident of the U.S. Preference will be given to MLA students who are changing careers by attending the CED.

Breeden

J. Brooks & Peggy Carroll Breeden Travel Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA or MLA

Purpose: This scholarship supports landscape architecture students and emphasizes the importance of student travel through support for visits to notable works by outstanding practitioners in the field. It is also intended to provide the opportunity for a recipient to visit professional landscape architecture firms to observe how they function.

Background: Created by Peggy Breeden in memory of her husband, Brooks. The inspiration for this awar was a travel / study award Brooks (MLA ’74) received while he was a student.

Additional Conditions: This award is merit based, for a student with outstanding academic and/or extracurricular achievements. The recipient will be asked to submit a brief biography and summary of experience to be shared with the fund representative.

Env&Des

Environment & Design

Eligibility: BLA/MLA/MHP/MUPD

Purpose: Created in 1986 to provide scholarships for worthy students in the College of Environment & Design, which includes Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning and Historic Preservation.

Background: This is a general scholarship created and offered by the College, which is supported through many and varied alumni gifts. The Donor Representative is the Dean of the College.

Additional Conditions: None.

Hite

Hite Graduate Student Support Fund

Eligibility: MLA

Purpose: This fund supports full-time MLA students with a demonstrated need for applied research funding related to his/her studies.

Additional Conditions: The recipient will be asked to provide his/her research proposal and a digital copy of his/her final thesis.

Jordan

Lawrie E. Jordan III Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA. Selection will be primarily merit-based but financial need may be also considered.

Purpose: To provide scholarship support to a graduate student in the Landscape Architecture program at the College of Environment and Design.

Background: Lawrie E. Jordan, III BLA 1973 co-founded the ERDAS company. He and fellow ERDAS founder, Bruce Rado, created the ERDAS Scholarship for GIS Studies Fund in 1995. They sold ERDAS to Leica, Inc. in 2000, and each partner split their fund to create their own named endowments in 2003. Lawrie serves as the Donor Representative for his fund.

Knox

William Lawrence Manning Knox Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA/MHP

Purpose: To provide tuition assistance or assistantship support for a full-time student pursuing a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or Historic Preservation at UGA.

Background: This fund was created in 1998 by Margaret E. Knox to honor William Lawrence Manning Sr., who passed away in 1996. Mr. Knox received his BSLA from UGA in 1935, being one of the earliest graduates of the landscape architecture program. Several sons and daughters of the prominent Knox family are the Donor Representatives for this fund.

Lambert

James Lambert International Travel Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA/MLA

Purpose: To provide awards to support global travel and study for landscape architecture students in the CED. The fund will only support international travel, not domestic. The award will be based on merit of the student’s proposal, not academic need. Application will include a submission of a proposal, schedule, and budget. Applicants will demonstrate how their plans will yield a substantial and transformational impact upon their academic career and life aspirations.

Additional Conditions: Upon return, the recipient will be encouraged to submit a paper to the Dean of the College reflecting upon what they learned and the impact that resulted from their experience.

Linley

John W. Linley Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA and MHP

Purpose: To provide tuition assistance in the form of scholarship or assistantship for eligible, full-time graduate students, in the MLA or MHP program.

Background: Created in 2001 to honor John W. Linley who was a professor of Landscape Architecture from 1963 to 1986 at UGA. A practicing architect, author and longtime resident of Athens, he passed away in 1996. Professor John C. Waters, colleague and friend, is the Donor Representative for this fund.

Additional Conditions: None.

Marshall

Randolph & Helen Marshall Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA entering 3rd year or above, or MLA in last two years of program. Out-of-state student required.

Purpose: To provide tuition assistance for full time, worthy/talented out-of-state students in need, who are pursuing a degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia, and to inspire students to give back.

Background: This fund was established by Randolph and Helen Marshall in 1996. Randolph received his BLA from UGA in 1972, and is principal of his own highly acclaimed firm. His work has received national recognition and exposure with a list of premiere clientele from around the world. Both Randy and Helen are the donor representatives for this fund.

Additional Conditions: Students who have been awarded before are encouraged to re-apply if they still have need.

Nettleton

Nettleton Travel Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA or MLA or MHP

Purpose: To provide support for travel abroad studies for full-time students majoring in Landscape Architecture or Historic Preservation in the College of Environment & Design, thus in order to become educated and appreciative travelers.

Background: This fund was established in 2003, in honor of Mrs. Carrie Buhrman Nettleton by her daughter Blakeslee Nettleton Chase. Mrs. Nettleton was a renowned garden club member in the State of Virginia and loved to travel. She encouraged her daughters and all she knew to travel and enjoy the world. Mrs. Chase was the first female MLA graduate from UGA in 1958. She and her husband, Allan – also a BLA graduate of ’56, ask that students prepare an illustrated report to be submitted to the Dean at the end of their travels.

Additional Conditions: Award is to be used only by the recipient for travel expenses. Applicants should submit a travel budget as part of their statement (estimate is fine). Recipient(s) will prepare an illustrated report to be submitted to the Dean at the end of their travels.

Owens

Hubert B. Owens Landscape Architecture Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA or MLA

Purpose: To provide scholarships to students who have demonstrated, through academic performance, outstanding potential in preparing for careers in professional landscape architecture.

Background: Hubert B. Owens founded the Landscape Architecture Program in 1928 at the University of Georgia. In 1969, he was named the first Dean of the School of Environmental Design. This fund was set up by alumni of the Landscape Architecture program in 1975 in his honor. Hubert was Dean until 1972. Hubert’s nephew, Richard Owens – a BLA Alumnus from ’76, is the Donor Representative for this fund, and remotely represented by Hubert’s son Bond, and daughter Sarah.

Prickett

Barbara Johnson Prickett Travel Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA or BLA. Selection will be primarily merit-based, but will take into consideration need, character, leadership, academic achievement, and a preference, but not requirement, for Georgia residency. Travel support to the CORTONA program ONLY. Eligibility for this scholarship requires that the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) verifies your financial need. First, you must fill out the FAFSA (found on the OSFA website). You should do this well before the scholarship application deadline, as the OSFA’s workload is out of our control. The OSFA will use the FAFSA to determine your need and the CED will query OSFA for their findings. If they have determined that you have financial need, you may be asked by the Scholarship Coordinator to complete a very simple authorization form that enables the OSFA to tell us the exact amount that you need, as we cannot award you a scholarship that exceeds this determined amount.

Purpose: To award tuition and living assistance support to a student in the Landscape Architecture program at the College of Environment and Design, by providing a scholarship to students studying landscape architecture specifically in UGA’s Cortona, Italy study abroad program.

Background: Established by her family and the Weswood Foundation, this scholarship is in memory of Barbara Johnson Prickett, who passed away in 2002 following decades of service to the Peachtree Garden Club in Atlanta. The scholarship honors the tradition begun by PGC and its Neel Reid Scholarship, and commemorates Barbara’s love of travel. Mr. Ernie Prickett, husband, is the Donor Representative for the fund.

Additional Conditions: Award is to be used only by the recipient for travel expenses to Cortona program. Applicants must submit a travel budget as part of their statement (estimate is fine). A report on studies in Cortona may be required post-trip.

Rado

Rado Family Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA and MUPD

Purpose: Primarily to provide scholarship support to graduate student(s) in the Landscape Architecture or Environmental Planning and Design Programs within the College of Environment and Design, who primarily have an interest in GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, or other specific areas which further the mission of the College. Secondarily, student applicants making a strong statement case for the study of environmentalism, conservation and open space may be considered.

Background: This fund was originally created out of the ERDAS scholarship from 1995 by Bruce Q. Rado, and then the Rado Family Foundation in 2003. Bruce Rado received his BLA from UGA in 1971 and his masters from Harvard, he was one of the founders of ERDAS and remained as Chairman of the Board through 2007. Mr. Rado and his wife Andrea are the Donor Representatives for this fund.

Additional Conditions: Merit based, but financial need is considered.

Rankin

Bartow Wright Rankin Scholarship

Eligibility: MLA

Purpose: To provide scholarship(s) or assistantship(s) for a graduate MLA student in Landscape Architecture in the College of Environment & Design.

Background: This fund was established in memory of Bartow Wright Rankin by his friends and family. Bartow was a committed environmentalist who earned his MLA at UGA in 1981. Tangible evidence of his belief that development and environmentalism not only can co-exist, but also add great value to American cities, is scattered through Atlanta in the many projects on which he worked. These include the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Coca-Cola’s headquarters, Skyland Trail, the Grand Hyatt, 999 Peachtree, the Mayfair Apartments, Ravinia, and Home Depot’s corporate campus. Bartow’s wife and daughter are the primary Donor Representatives for this fund.

Reid

Neel Reid Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA/MLA

Purpose: Merit

Background: Established in 1947 by the Peachtree Garden Club to honor their friend and renowned architect Neel Reid. This fund remains one of our oldest and most prestigious awards given to students.

Additional Conditions: Students do not directly apply. However, based upon student applications for scholarships, the CED Scholarship Committee forwards outstanding applications to the Peachtree Garden Club who select awardees. Attendance to the annual PGC October luncheon during the award year is required.

Wigginton

Brooks E. Wigginton Scholarship

Eligibility: BLA or MLA

Purpose: To provide scholarship assistance for outstanding full-time students pursuing a (BLA or MLA) degree in Landscape Architecture.

Background: Brooks E. Wigginton, FALSA, served on the Landscape Architecture faculty at UGA from 1945 to 1958, and was an author of three books on southeastern trees and shrubs. Mr. Wigginton passed away in September 1995, and this scholarship was created in his honor in 2001. Mr. Wigginton’s son is the Donor Representative for this fund.
