On August 29th, 2022, CED professor emeritus and beloved historic preservationist John Waters passed away. We know this sudden loss has significantly impacted our community near and far, and we offer our deep condolences to his family and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him during his 85 years.
John will be greatly missed by his students, colleagues, and friends here at CED. He taught in the Landscape Architecture and Historic Preservation programs for 27 years, and he played important roles in many organizations including International Council of Monuments & Sites (ICOMOS), National Council for Preservation Education, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation (now Historic Athens). Since his passing, The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and Historic Athens have published articles remembering him and his brilliant, heartfelt work in the historic preservation field. The family has also published a brief obituary here, with more details to follow. We invite you all to read these stories and join in honoring John’s memory. You can also share your own memories of John on his obituary page.
There is a service celebrating John’s life on Thursday, October 13th, 2022 at 4:00pm in the UGA Chapel. A reception in the Founders Memorial Garden will follow the service.
