In Memoriam: Brian LaHaie

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brian LaHaie, retired CED professor, esteemed colleague, and friend, passed away on July 28, 2022. Brian joined the CED landscape architecture faculty in January 2002 and retired from UGA in May 2020.

Throughout his 18 years at CED, Brian pursued a range of interests including public gardens, eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and memorial landscapes. He held a variety of academic positions including serving as the MLA Program Coordinator from 2004- 2009 and the Associate Dean of Outreach and Professional Relations from 2012-2014.  Brian also taught for many years in the Cortona, Italy travel program and served as the faculty advisor for Georgia Landscape Magazine, CED’s student-led publication.

Brian also dedicated his time to the American Society of Landscape Architects on both state and national levels, advocating for innovations in professional and educational practice in the landscape architecture industry.

In honor of his life and work, we encourage our community to revisit Brian’s work in The Field, ASLA Professional Practice Network’s blog, as well as remember his many contributions to the CED over the years. You can also read Brian’s obituary and contribute memories here. According to the family’s wishes, contributions in Brian’s honor can be made to the Glioblastoma Foundation in support of critical brain tumor research.
