CCDP Student Employment

The Center for Community Design & Preservation (CCDP)  coordinates opportunities that connect our students and faculty with communities in Georgia that need our expertise, and in turn, provide us with practical applications of our work.  We currently have a variety of student employment opportunities that we are seeking qualified candidates for, including Summer internships and  Graduate Assistantships.  

Hourly Positions (Summer)

Candidates who can continue working for CCDP for the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters (either as hourly or Graduate Assistantship) are preferred.

Outreach Assistant
The student Outreach Assistant position directly supports the work of the College by responding to requests from the public for CED expertise, maintaining our database of community projects, managing our Student Job Board of independent project opportunities, and communicating our community engagement work on the CCDP website and social media platforms.  Read More ▼
 Duties this Summer include:
  • Developing a StoryMap (example) of CED Outreach projects in a map-based interactive tool
  • Writing short news stories and preparing Slick Sheets (example) on service-learning class projects for print and the web
  • Supporting the development of an evaluation and assessment survey
  • Responding to requests for CED assistance
  • Maintaining online Student Job Board and Faculty Project Board
Time and renumeration:     
  • Rate: $15/hr 
  • Hours: 20-40 hrs/wk.  (If enrolled in Summer classes, max is 20.) Fairly flexible schedule.
  • Dates: May 2023 to August 2023.   Start and end dates flexible  

Work Description/Performance Plan
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies required to successfully perform work: Interested in community engagement work; is organized and detail-oriented; exhibits good people skills; has strong communications skills, especially in writing and layout.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in writing, graphic layout, and database management; experience with ESRI StoryMaps; proven customer-service experience; as well as experience with facilitating small group discussions and exposure to large public input sessions.

Findit Surveyor I
This position is for entry-level architectural field surveyors for the Findit Program. Since 2002, Findit has taught students to identify and document cultural resources, having surveyed over 60 Georgia counties and cities thus far. We have several exciting projects on hand that will hone architectural knowledge and sharpen the skills that employers look for.   Read More ▼

Duties include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Field survey and documentation  
  • Archival research  
  • Data entry and analysis 
  • Digital mapping   
  • Report creation  

Successful candidates should be prepared to meet the following requirements: 

  • Interest and enthusiasm for American Architecture styles and cultural landscapes  
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task 
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team structure  
  • Strong writing and communications skills  
  • Proven ability to interact with general public  
  • Ability to work outdoors and travel to remote locations throughout the state   
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license  
  • Completion of successful background check  

Successful candidates will be proficient in the following technologies:   

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint…) 
  • GIS  
  • Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign) 
  • Digital Photography

Assistantships (Fall-Spring)

Charrette Assistant
Are you interested in community engagement, love a fast-paced design project, and are an organized multi-tasker?  CCDP is offering a Fall-Spring student assistantship to provide logistical support to our design charrettes including pre-planning, workshop logistics and report layout.  The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in our outreach work, has good people skills, is organized and detail-oriented, and has strong writing, graphic and presentation abilities.  Read More ▼

CCDP leads 1-2 per charrettes per semester for community partners throughout the state using student volunteers from CED and other UGA schools/colleges.  This assistantship position works with CCDP’s Director/charrette facilitator on each of the three phases of a charrette: pre-charrette preparations, a 3-day design workshop in a community (virtual and in-person public engagement), and post-charrette report production.  Primary duties for charrettes include:

  • Phase I - Research, Assessment, & Preparation: Advertising and soliciting student volunteers, communication with community point-persons, design issue research, creation of site-specific base maps, creation of project brief, and travel and lodging arrangements.
  • Phase II - Design Workshop: Charrette weekend workshop management whilst participating in charrette, including organizing materials and supplies to support student team and facilitator, managing the on-site collection of drawings and written content, creating social media content, and preparing presentations and surveys for virtual public engagement pieces.
  • Phase III - Refine the Concepts: Collecting and organizing all workshop content, conducting additional case study research, refining drawings and maps to be print-ready, analyzing survey results, writing and layout of charrette reports and producing content for CCDP website, social media, and slick sheets (one-page project overviews). 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: Interest in community engagement work; is organized and detail-oriented; exhibits good people skills. Strong writing, graphic and presentation abilities (PowerPoint, hand-graphics, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GIS mapping). 

Preferred Qualifications: Excellence in graphic presentation and layout, proficiency in GIS analysis and map creation; proficiency in managing group projects; experience with facilitating small group discussions; exposure to large public input sessions.

Outreach Assistant
The student Outreach Assistant position directly supports the work of the College by responding to requests from the public for CED expertise, maintaining our CED project opportunity boards for students and faculty, supporting faculty teaching service-learning classes, communicating our engagement work on the CCDP website and social media platforms, and performing other duties as needed. Additionally, this position supports two annual Experience UGA 10th grade field trips in concert with CED’s undergraduate Georgia Students in Landscape Architecture (GSLA).  Read More ▼

Main duties include:

  • Responding to requests for CED assistance
  • Maintaining online Student Job Board and Faculty Project Board
  • Support service-learning classes through correspondence with community partners, planning, travel, critical reflection, etc.
  • Writing short news stories and preparing Slick Sheets (example) on service-learning class projects for print and the web
  • Support for two Experience UGA field trips, including: Volunteer management, supply acquisition, field trip logistics, and other behind-the-scenes aspects as needed
  • Maintaining a StoryMap (example) of CED Outreach projects in a map-based interactive tool
  • Managing an evaluation and assessment survey of outreach projects
