GARDEN OF BIotanical Delights:
Ceramics and Photography by Diane Kempler

October 3rd through December 7th, 2018
Opening reception October 3rd, 4:30 - 6 p.m.

This is a two-women show by Atlanta artists Diane Kempler and Katherine Mitchell that explores the human relationship to nature. Both women are former professors of Art at Emory University.

Katherine Mitchell:

Over the years I have moved back and forth between my interest in architectural form and the natural world. I began the Hearing the Trees series when a favorite tree, a White Oak, had become diseased, and I began a series of works focused on the tree, which I had come to love. As always I am drawn to geometry, to the layering of systems and patterns, as well as more recently to imbedding texts within these works. These drawings/paintings serve as talismans for me and the tree, and by extension, this tree represents all trees and symbolizes our endangered natural world.

Diane Kempler:

I am interested in the evolution theory in biology where modifications of objects occur in successive generations. Looking thru the microscope I explore this world of microbes and molecule. Using hand building technique with clay, which is my primary medium, I create works that reference that world. The idea of change that occurs both in nature and the human world is a prevalent theme of mine. This involves the cycle of life -namely, birth, death and rebirth.
