Dr. Borić and GSU historian Glenn Eskew at the Busy Bee Café on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Atlanta, an iconic soul food restaurant associated with many figures of the civil rights movement.
Dr. sc. Saša Poljanec-Borić from the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences in Zagreb, Croatia visited the MHP Program at the College of Environment and Design in February. Dr. Borić, who holds degrees in Sociology and Economics and has extensive experience in the field of cultural tourism has been a principle partner of the University of Georgia Study Abroad Program in Croatia.
While at UGA, Dr. Borić met with faculty in CED, Sociology, and Linguistics and delivered a lecture for the Preservation Economics class. She accompanied the MHP students and faculty on a field study to Charleston, SC where she investigated the impact of cruise ship tourism on historic cities, one of her research interests. She also explored another are of research interest, memory and commemoration, by studying the Martin Luther King historic district and other civil rights sites in Atlanta with CED Professor James Reap. Her research including interviews with scholars, community activists and leaders of the African American community was arranged with the assistance of Allison Moon Duncan of the Atlanta Regional Commission, an MHP alumna. Valuable guidance and insight into the Civil Rights Movement was provided by Georgia State University Professor Glenn Eskew.
